2014 Shannon Ridge Petite Sirah: This family-owned, sustainably farmed winery in Clear Lake offers some of the best values in all of California, and the 2014 Petite Sirah is no exception. The fruit flavors of blackberry, blueberry and plum are nicely accented by dried herbs and black pepper undertones. This 92-point wine (as rated by Wine Enthusiast Magazine) is an extreme value. Production was limited, so be sure to grab some before it’s gone.
Sonoma Portworks Deco Chocolate Port: Sonoma Portworks is the only winery in all of Sonoma County to specialize just in port-style wines and after dinner drinks. The Deco chocolate port is made from very old vine zinfandel grapes and petite sirah, then blended with high quality dark chocolate essence. Flavors of dark cherry, blueberry and espresso mingle well with the port’s signature rich chocolate flavor.
2015 Chateau La Freynelle Blanc: From the Entre-deux-Mers region in Bordeaux, this wine is made from a blend of sauvignon blanc and semillon grapes. The 2015 vintage in this region is considered one of the best in decades. While Bordeaux wines are usually associated with a hefty price tag, this is a steal at under $15. Fresh, bright flavors of gooseberry and pear dominate with underlying notes of nectarine, adding to the wine’s vibrant personality.
2014 Bodega Norton Reserva Malbec: Argentina is known for producing some of the world’s best malbecs and this is a terrific example of why. The 2014 was chosen as one of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year for 2016. Don’t just take their word for it—grab a bottle and enjoy the boysenberry, dark currant and black olive flavors for yourself. While the wine is not sweet, there is a rich chocolate component that adds a silky texture to the wine, making it all that more enjoyable to drink.
