What is gin? Gin is a clear, neutral grain spirit that’s distilled and flavored with juniper berries and other botanical ingredients.
How did it originate? For centuries, distilled spirits were infused with herbs, berries and other botanicals for medicinal purposes. Genever, the original gin was a barley–based spirit flavored with juniper berries made in 16th–century Holland. After English forces discovered the drink while fighting the Eighty Years’ War (1568–1648), English distillers started making gin locally to avoid heavy import taxes. The spirit grew in popularity, and the rest, as they say, is history!
How much alcohol is in gin? Gin’s minimum alcohol by volume (ABV) actually varies by origin. Gin must be bottled with at least 40% ABV (80 proof) in the U.S. and 37.5% ABV (75 proof) in Europe.
What are the different kinds of gin? The most common varieties of gin include London Dry, Old Tom, Plymouth and Craft Gins. Find cocktail recipes for each on their dedicated blogs!
