Breaking news: Nugget Markets' coffee and juice bars are going strawless! It’s true, once we run out of our current supply, we will no longer provide plastic straws at our coffee and juice bars throughout the company (except as required by ADA). We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this sustainable step forward by raising a cup of your favorite coffee, smoothie or juice!

Why are we moving away from plastic straws? One major reason is to reduce the harmful production of plastic. Though straws are in mass production (some estimates include 500 million used per day in the U.S.), straws are not recyclable. As a sustainable grocer who balances the three pillars of sustainability (social responsibility, economic vitality and environmental stewardship), we can no longer advocate plastic straws as a balanced decision, and are therefore providing other eco-friendlier options for our guests.
Want to use even fewer single-use materials? All of our cold cups (used for smoothies, iced coffees, etc.), will now come with a strawless lid—no straw required! If you would still like a straw, simply ask the barista and we’ll supply you with a bamboo straw by request only. These bamboo straws are made from sugar cane husks and bamboo grass instead of paper, reducing the number of trees that need to be cut. You’re also welcome to use your own reusable straws for an even more sustainable approach.
And it doesn’t stop there! On our quest for maximum sustainability, we have also swapped out our bleached paper napkins for unbleached ones made with 25% post-industrial content and 75% renewable resources like sugar cane and eucalyptus. Here’s to enjoying all your favorite drinks and snacks as sustainably as possible!
