Shrubs
Please note that this is an older article. Any products or services pictured or described may have changed or may no longer be available. Thank you for visiting!
I’ve got a great new product to introduce to you: Shrubs! No, I’m not talking about the low–growing plants around your house. What I’m referring to is the vinegar–based mixer that can be used in cocktails (among its many other uses). Although they are trendy now, shrubs date back to the colonial era in America and were popular before the advent of refrigeration.
They’re made from a combination of sweet and savory elements: the vinegar adds acidity that is balanced by the sweetness of the infused fruits, and they can be used as you would use bitters in a drink. These shrubs, from Shrub and Company, are made locally in Berkeley using fresh organic fruit juices and a number of different vinegars. You only need to use a ¼–ounce to ½–ounce per drink, and they last a long time. We do recommend refrigerating them after opening. • HANK BEAL (Adult Beverage)
