Here at Nugget Markets, we’re proud to have a green leadership team to help us with our everyday and big picture sustainability efforts. Our corporate sustainability coordinator leads a team of store-level green gurus who together keep our sustainability program going strong. How do they do it? By overseeing the company-wide sustainability program, setting goals, writing benchmarks and helping us constantly improve by staying on the cutting edge of sustainability in our food system. Let’s meet a few of our amazing green team!

Shea Robinson, Sustainability Coordinator: Shea is our fearless Sustainability Coordinator. Graduating with a degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from UC Davis, she came into the position at Nugget Markets excited to share her passion and dedication to her Green Guru team and to our associates. Shea loves everything food and is excited for the opportunity to work towards promoting a more equitable food system. Her favorite moments in the program have been helping her team be more confident in themselves and their work. She thinks of her work like a honey bee—one bee won’t pollenate very much, but a swarm of bees gives us ⅓ of our current food production!

Rose R., Green Guru, Woodland: Rose has been brewing up coffee as a coffee bar departmental manager with Nugget Markets for three years now, but her passion and interest in sustainability have been present from the beginning. She grew up in a community where there were no waste services, so composting and recycling where mandatory. Her favorite experience in the program has been expanding her knowledge of sustainability and becoming a better departmental manager by assessing her practices through a lens of sustainability. She feels like she’s grown as a teacher in her time at Nugget Markets and loves the moment when she explains sustainability to an associate or guest and they understand it for the first time.

Tammy M., Green Guru, West Sacramento: Tammy is a grocery legend, having served in grocery retail since she was a teenager, and joining the Nugget Markets family more than 15 years ago! She has been involved in sustainability even longer, with her interest flourishing in 1980 when she first moved to Davis. She loved how involved the community was in researching sustainable alternatives, taking care of each other and taking care of the environment. Her favorite experience in the program was taking a field trip to Sierra Nevada and gaining insight into what other sustainable companies are doing to close the loop on their waste. She loves her team at West Sac and enjoys helping associates incorporate sustainability into their daily habits.

Jee V., Green Guru, Sacramento, Florin: Jee has kept his store roarin’ for the last five years as a person-in-charge and for the last year as a green guru! His eyes were opened to sustainability at the program’s start in 2015. Since then, Jee has incorporated sustainability into the everyday habits of his associates. He knows that associates follow leadership and there isn’t any greater satisfaction for him than seeing every associate—whether a checker, departmental manager or store director—buying into the program. Jee is so good at creating new best practices at his store that he gives our sustainability coordinator a run for her money! Ask any associate in the store and they will tell you how much they appreciate Jee’s enthusiasm for the program.

Kenneth C., Green Guru, Vacaville: Kenneth has been with Nugget Markets for more than a decade, filling every role possible before settling in as manager-in-charge and green guru. He has always been interested in sustainability, feeling motivated to do so by living in Davis and having compost be a key learning standard in his elementary school. His favorite part of the program is that the learning never stops. He values our company’s three pillars of sustainability and how he’s been able to connect his college projects with what he’s doing at work. His passion for the program is infectious and he loves the challenge of helping his associates gain an understanding of sustainability in its entirety.
