It's Heart Health Month, and we partnered with the American Heart Association and Sacramento's Go Red for Women for the 2013 Children's Heart Art Challenge art contest, sponsored locally by Nugget Markets and designed to share heart-health awareness in a fun, creative way. This year, local 4th and 5th grade classes at schools near each Nugget Market location were invited to take the challenge, and here are our winners in each category! When we think of wines from Portugal, the great sweet Port wines come to mind first. However these days, more of the wines from Portugal's Douro Valley are being made in a dry table wine style. The quality of these wines has been consistently excellent at all price levels. Try the Altano Red for a great bargain wine at just $7.99, or the 2009 Chryseia (one of the best wines I've tasted this year) from Prats & Symington.- Mike Taylor, Wine Steward at Davis, Covell Blvd.
Fulfill your craving with Krave Jerky, a healthy game day snack! Locally produced in Sonoma, Krave jerky has no nitrates, hormones or artificial flavors and is made with all-natural lean cut meats. Each variety comes with pairing suggestions on the packaging. Misha, our beer specialist, has put together these excellent suggestions.
KRAVE JERKY Chili Lime pairs great with Corona and a wedge of lime when you need to cool off from the spicy chili heat. If you love spice and bold flavors, pair this with a nice citrusy India Pale Ale like Stone IPA from San Diego. Available in 22 oz. ($4.39) and 6 pks. ($10.99).
KRAVE JERKY Sweet Honey Chipotle pairs great with Newcastle Brown Ale. Newcastle has nice rich caramel malt flavor and a smooth finish that match up nicely with the jerky’s honey and chipotle taste.
